Small SUV Sales Scale in India
India’s compact-SUV series shows how quickly the segment expanded across the reported fiscal periods. The underlying industry report reproduces SIAM and CRISIL MI&A data, and FY2024 is year-to-date through February 2024 rather than a full fiscal year.
| Fiscal period | India compact SUV sales | Measurement scope |
|---|---|---|
| FY2019 | 772 thousand | Compact SUV segment |
| FY2020 | 762 thousand | Compact SUV segment |
| FY2021 | 906 thousand | Compact SUV segment |
| FY2022 | 1,261 thousand | Compact SUV segment |
| FY2023 | 1,705 thousand | Compact SUV segment |
| FY2024 YTD, Apr 2023-Feb 2024 | 1,879 thousand | Compact SUV segment; not a full year |

The FY2024 YTD comparison across India’s listed SUV subsegments also puts compact SUVs ahead of larger categories. Compact SUVs recorded 1,879 thousand units, compared with 1,069 thousand mid-size SUVs and 327 thousand large SUVs in the same YTD period.
The reported FY2024 YTD model shares show a concentrated but competitive field:
- Maruti Suzuki’s Brezza held 15% of the Indian compact-SUV segment.
- Tata Motors’ Nexon held 12% of the segment.
- Maruti Suzuki’s Fronx held 11% of the segment.
- Hyundai Motor India’s Venue held 11% of the segment.
These are model shares reported in the industry report, not independently calculated estimates. The segment definitions and fiscal-period treatment come from the report.
Small SUV Trends Across India and Advanced Economies
India’s compact-SUV volume rose from 772 thousand units in FY2019 to 1,705 thousand in FY2023. The report separately records 1,879 thousand units for FY2024 YTD through February 2024, but that shorter period should not be treated as a like-for-like full-year comparison with FY2023.
India’s other SUV categories also grew between the cited endpoints:
| Segment | FY2019 | FY2024 YTD through Feb. 2024 | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact SUV | 772 thousand | 1,879 thousand | Indian segment |
| Mid-size SUV | 445 thousand | 1,069 thousand | Indian segment |
| Large SUV | 145 thousand | 327 thousand | Indian segment |

The advanced-economy picture is broader than small SUVs. The International Energy Agency estimated around 20 million SUV sales in advanced economies in 2023 and said SUVs exceeded 50% of vehicle-market share there for the first time in the cited year.
Those figures describe all SUVs rather than the small-SUV subset, so they indicate the scale of the surrounding vehicle category rather than a direct small-SUV market total. The geography is also limited to advanced economies, not the entire world.
Small Electric SUV and Electrification Statistics
Small electric SUVs are part of a much larger electric-car transition. The IEA estimated that the global electric-car fleet reached almost 58 million at the end of 2024, equal to about 4% of the worldwide passenger-car fleet.
The same source estimated that electric cars displaced over 1 million barrels of oil consumption per day in 2024. These are all-electric-car measures, not small-SUV-only outcomes.
Regional adoption was uneven:
- Around one in ten cars on China’s roads was electric at the end of 2024.
- Around one in twenty cars on Europe’s roads was electric at the end of 2024.
- China’s electric-car sales increased by almost 40% year over year in 2024.
- Almost two-thirds of global electric-car sales were in China in 2024.
- China’s electric-car sales share was close to 50% for the full year 2024.
China’s sales mix also changed across powertrains. Plug-in hybrids excluding extended-range EVs rose from about 15% of China’s electric-car sales in 2020 to nearly 30% in 2024, while extended-range EVs exceeded 10% in 2024 after more than quadrupling since 2020.
In the United States, more than 360,000 electric cars were sold in Q1 2025, around 10% higher than in Q1 2024. The IEA forecast that global electric-car sales would exceed 20 million in 2025 and represent more than one-quarter of global car sales; these are forecasts, not observed outcomes.

Small SUV Fuel Economy and Vehicle Technology Data
US regulatory categories help show how SUVs interact with fleet efficiency, but they are not interchangeable with the consumer term “small SUV.” The EPA estimated average model-year-2024 new-vehicle real-world fuel economy at a record 27.2 mpg for US new light-duty vehicles.
Average new-vehicle fuel economy improved in 16 of the 20 years through model year 2024 and was 41% higher than in model year 2004. Under NHTSA regulatory definitions, model-year-2024 new vehicles were 34% cars and 66% trucks.
| US measure | Model-year-2024 result | Definition or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Average new-vehicle real-world fuel economy | 27.2 mpg | All new light-duty vehicles |
| Truck-SUV fuel economy | 25.7 mpg | Increased by 1.0 mpg from MY2023 |
| Truck SUVs’ production share | 50% | US new-vehicle production |
| Plug-in hybrids among car SUVs | 3% additional share | EPA car-SUV class |

Battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid car SUVs contributed a 9.0 mpg increase to car-SUV fuel economy in model year 2024. Without battery-electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles, average US new-vehicle fuel economy in 2024 would have been 1.7 mpg lower, according to the EPA’s counterfactual estimate.
These measures are useful for understanding technology effects, but the EPA’s car-SUV and truck-SUV classes are broader regulatory groupings. They should not be silently relabeled as small-SUV statistics.
Small SUV Emissions, Fleet Growth and Energy Impacts
Worldwide SUV statistics include every SUV size, so they provide environmental context rather than a direct small-SUV footprint. The IEA estimated that more than 360 million SUVs were on roads worldwide in 2023, with around 30 million internal-combustion SUVs added to the global fleet that year.
The IEA also estimated that SUV combustion-related CO2 emissions reached 1 billion tonnes worldwide in 2023. SUV emissions increased by around 100 million tonnes from the previous year and accounted for more than 20% of the growth in global energy-related CO2 emissions in 2023.
Energy and physical comparisons provide further context:
- SUV-related oil consumption rose by more than 600,000 barrels per day over 2022-2023.
- SUV-related oil-demand growth over 2022-2023 was more than one-quarter of overall annual oil-demand growth.
- SUVs weigh 200-300 kg more than an average medium-sized car in the IEA comparison.
- SUVs typically occupy nearly 0.3 square metres more space than an average medium-sized car.
- SUVs emit roughly 20% more CO2 than an average medium-sized car in the IEA comparison.

The scale of electrification does not erase the distinction between vehicle categories. Electric-car fleet and oil-displacement figures cover electric cars generally, while the emissions, weight and footprint comparisons cover SUVs generally.
Small SUV Model Competition and Availability
India’s compact-SUV market had several leading nameplates in the FY2024 YTD table, with Brezza at 15%, Nexon at 12%, and both Fronx and Venue at 11%. Those shares show model-level competition within the segment, but they do not represent global availability or a complete worldwide ranking.
Electrified model disclosures add a product-level view. Hyundai’s FY2024-25 India launch disclosure specified the CRETA Electric with up to 473 km of range and stated that it had more than 75 safety features.
| Product disclosure | Reported measure | Period and geography |
|---|---|---|
| Hyundai CRETA Electric | Up to 473 km range | FY2024-25 launch disclosure, India |
| Hyundai CRETA Electric | More than 75 safety features | FY2024-25 launch disclosure, India |

The range is a company-stated maximum, with test-cycle conditions and trim not specified in the summarized disclosure. The safety-feature count is also a company product claim and may vary by trim and by how features are defined, so it should not be treated as an independent market measurement.
