64 Kia Electric Car Statistics: Sales, Strategy, Markets and Sustainability

Kia sold 194,124 battery-electric vehicles globally in 2024 on a wholesale basis, alongside 382,764 hybrids and 67,797 plug-in hybrids. This overview separates those powertrains, distinguishes observed results from company targets, and identifies where the wider market data is U.S.-specific rather than Kia-specific.

Kia’s battery-electric sales are reported globally on a wholesale basis. The company’s EV category is separate from HEVs and PHEVs, so the figures below should not be read as total electrified sales.

Year Battery-electric vehicles sold Geography and basis
2022 156,500 Global Kia operations; wholesale
2023 198,314 Global Kia operations; wholesale
2024 194,124 Global Kia operations; wholesale

Kia’s reported EV sales increased by 41,814 vehicles from 2022 to 2023, based on the company’s rounded whole-vehicle counts. They then fell by 4,190 vehicles from 2023 to 2024, leaving 2024 below the 2023 peak in this series.

Eco-friendly sales moved upward even while battery-EV sales softened in 2024. Eco-friendly means HEV, PHEV and EV in Kia’s reporting: the combined category rose from 492,593 vehicles in 2022 to 598,846 in 2023 and 644,685 in 2024.

  • Eco-friendly vehicles represented 23.5% of Kia sales in 2022 globally.
  • Eco-friendly vehicles represented 26.3% of Kia sales in 2023 globally.
  • Eco-friendly vehicles represented 27.0% of Kia sales in 2024 globally.

These percentages are management-accounting measures and include hybrids and plug-in hybrids, not only battery-electric cars. The Kia Sustainability Report 2025 is the source for the 2022–2024 performance series.

Kia EV Strategy, Targets and Model Expansion

Kia’s strategy combines battery EVs with HEVs, PHEVs and purpose-built vehicles. Its forecasts therefore describe a broader electrification program, not an EV-only sales plan.

Measure Company plan Period
Annual EV sales 1.6 million vehicles 2030
Total annual sales 4.3 million vehicles 2030
Annual electrified-model sales 2.48 million vehicles 2030
Electrified share of total sales 58% 2030
EV line-up 15 models 2027

The 2030 electrified-model projection includes HEVs, PHEVs and battery EVs. Kia also planned EV production at 13 global factories and listed EV2, EV3, EV4 and EV5 among the additions to its line-up; those plans were stated in a 2024 strategy announcement and may change.

The 2024 business plan included two new models, EV3 and the K4 sedan, plus product enhancements for EV6, K8 and Sportage. Kia targeted 3.2 million wholesale vehicle sales and a 3.8% market share in 2024, while noting that the later reported annual result uses a different release.

Other plans show why EV and hybrid counts should remain separate. Kia planned eight HEV models in 2026, up from six in 2024, and nine HEV models in 2028; it also targeted 250,000 annual PBV sales in 2030, including 150,000 PV5 and 100,000 PV7 units.

Kia planned to invest KRW 38 trillion through 2028 to secure future competitiveness. The investment plan is corporate-wide and is not presented as EV-only spending.

Kia EV, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Sales Data

Kia’s 2024 powertrain mix illustrates the scale difference between battery EVs and other electrified categories.

Powertrain 2022 2023 2024
HEV 254,327 311,671 382,764
PHEV 81,766 88,861 67,797
Battery EV 156,500 198,314 194,124
Combined eco-friendly 492,593 598,846 644,685

HEVs were Kia’s largest eco-friendly powertrain category in 2024, with 382,764 vehicles. Battery EVs accounted for 194,124 of the 644,685 eco-friendly vehicles, while PHEVs accounted for 67,797.

Combined eco-friendly sales increased by 152,092 vehicles from 2022 to 2024. That is a change in the combined HEV, PHEV and EV category, not a battery-EV-only increase.

The 2024 report also records 644,685 eco-friendly vehicles against a prior 2024 target of 760,888. Kia’s sustainability reporting notes that the target and performance may use different reporting timing or accounting bases, so the comparison should not be treated as a like-for-like performance ratio.

Kia Electric Vehicle Markets and Production Context

Global EV totals sit within a much larger all-powertrain sales base. Kia reported 3,089,457 vehicles sold globally in 2024, including 6,086 special vehicles.

2024 sales measure Vehicles Scope
Total global sales 3,089,457 Domestic, overseas and special sales
South Korea 540,010 All powertrains
Outside South Korea 2,543,361 All powertrains
Special vehicles 6,086 2,136 domestic; 3,950 overseas

Source: Kia sold 3,089,457 vehicles in 2024. The domestic total was 4.2% lower than in 2023, while overseas sales increased 1.0%.

Selected model totals provide market context but are not EV-only measures. Kia sold 12,851 EV3 units and 14,978 Niro units in South Korea in 2024; Niro sales include its available powertrains.

Outside South Korea, Kia sold 513,462 Sportage units and 250,349 Seltos units in 2024. These model totals likewise include available powertrains and should not be used as battery-EV sales.

Kia Electric Car Emissions and Energy Statistics

Kia’s corporate environmental metrics concern production sites and value-chain accounting. They do not measure charging energy or the lifetime emissions of an individual Kia electric car.

2024 production-site metric Reported value
Scope 1 and 2 emissions 1,178.5 thousand tonnes CO2e
Scope 1 direct emissions 386.3 thousand tonnes CO2e
Scope 2 indirect emissions 792.2 thousand tonnes CO2e
Scope 1 and 2 intensity 0.43 tCO2e per vehicle unit

Source: Kia Sustainability Report 2025.

In 2023, Kia’s domestic and overseas production sites consumed 3,637,639 MWh of energy. Domestic sites used 2,322,506 MWh, overseas sites used 1,315,133 MWh, and renewable-energy consumption reached 151,575 MWh.

These energy figures describe production-site use rather than the electricity required to charge vehicles after sale. The 2023 production-site measures come from the Kia Sustainability Report 2024.

Kia’s renewable-energy targets are corporate forecasts: 66% at facilities worldwide by 2030, 82% by 2035 and 100% by 2040. None of these targets should be presented as achieved performance.

Kia EV Performance and Wider Electric-Car Market Data

The EPA provides a U.S. industry benchmark rather than Kia-specific results. Its model-year 2024 figures are preliminary or projected, while model years through 2023 are final in the report.

  • EPA projected BEVs and PHEVs together would reach 15% of U.S. light-duty vehicle production in model year 2024.
  • EPA reported that BEVs accounted for 36% of U.S. model year 2023 car-SUV production, a regulatory class that is not all SUVs and is not Kia-specific.
  • The average U.S. model year 2023 new vehicle had estimated real-world emissions of 319 g/mi CO2 and fuel economy of 27.1 mpg.
  • Average U.S. model year 2023 real-world CO2 was 18 g/mi lower than in model year 2022.
  • U.S. car-SUV CO2 emissions fell 60 g/mi, or 24%, from model year 2022 to 2023, while fuel economy increased by 7.2 mpg.
  • The average U.S. model year 2023 new vehicle had a 0-to-60 time of 7.3 seconds, while EPA projected 7.4 seconds for model year 2024.

EPA attributes part of the car-SUV emissions change to the influx of BEVs, but these are industry-wide findings. The source is the 2024 EPA Automotive Trends Report: Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Fuel Economy, and Technology since 1975.
